Since the RC for Karmic Koala is out, I spent the weekend upgrading my main box to Karmic. Well actually I didn't. I used my usuall apt-get install method and then went out went into town to see the film "Dorian Gray". My faithful Shuttle box spent its time upgrading itself and when I came back (or rather when I looked at this morning) the new version of Ubuntu had mostly installed.

I say mostly since there were one or two issues. In no particular  order these were:

  • A problem with DebConf
debconf: DbDriver "config": /var/cache/
debconf/config.dat is locked by another process: Resource temporarily unavailable

Solved by doing:

$ sudo fuser /var/cache/debconf/config.dat
/var/cache/debconf/config.dat: 12345

And then killing the process mentioned. Ie, sudo kill 12345

  • Nvidia Noveau was installed but not compatible with the new kernal. When apt tried to rebuild it constantly failed, causing apt-get to crash out. (This probably caused the previous problem...?)
  • The last issue was that "screen" disappeared halfway though. I had to kill apt-get and had to continue upgrading by opening a window on the machine. Again, this may have caused the first issue.

So far so good. Like other Ubuntu upgrades everything has changed but not changed that much. If you see what I mean. I'll spend some time later playing with it and see whether its ready to wheel this upgrade out at work... (All of the developers in our group are on Ubuntu and I'm in charge of making them work ok...)
