Updated for Natty Narwhal (Ubuntu 11.04)

Why Oracle 10g on Ubuntu...?

Oracle doesn't officially currently support its database on Ubuntu. However, I think that Ubuntu, especially the current release (09.10 : Karmic) is a great development platform. At my place of work there is a small development dept all busily developing and all using Ubuntu as the development platform of choice. The system we support uses Oracle 10g as its database. It followed that if we are to work productively then we needed some way of installing Oracle on Ubuntu. This guide is the result of lots of trial, error and spending time figuring out the best way to install Oracle 10g on Ubuntu.

Plenty of people who have blogs are doing their year-end round-ups, and this one is no different. Well, slightly different as I don't take everything so seriously... So without further ado, here is my most disappointing gadget of 2009 : Palm Pre.

The Palm Pre turned up at the beginning of 2009 with lots of rumour and expectations. It was going to be revolutionary type of phone with it's widely touted "synergy". But then then things started to unravel.

Here's an interesting development from Palm. The Ares SDK. You will need a Palm Developer Account to access it, but once you've got that you're in. So far it looks like an online Visual Basic for Palm Pre. I heard about this yesterday via Engadget but didn't have time to check it out until today. And, yes, its very, very cool.

Setting Up XDMCP on Karmic Koala (Ubuntu 09.10) PDF Print E-mail

In Karmic Koala 09.10, the powers that be removed the UI to switch on XDMCP. This enables one to log-in remotely to your workstation / computer from another Linux box. This comes in very, very handy but its also a bit non-secure. (Which is probably why the people in charge of Gnome / Ubuntu stripped it out). But is still there if you want to use it.

The following instructions are adapted from this blog entry. Its mostly the same, I've just removed some of the original authors slightly more rambling (no offense intended) introduction. Hit the "Read More" Button to see the instructions / tutorial.

Well, that was fun. I upgraded two machines to Snow Leopard 10.6.2 and they couldn't see each other. No pings, no ssh access, no web access. I spent the morning trying to work out how to fix it. However I had a Ubuntu box that could access both computers. Odd. I got as far as finding out that it only affected connections over the local network. It also seemed to be some kind of DNS problem.

Then I had my bright idea. "Lets try resetting the router." And it worked...!

So this is a post that will help you save your Sunday mornings...
