Thoughts About the iTablet PDF Print E-mail

My thoughts on the iTablet. Its mostly stream-of-conscious, stuff that I really want it to be. It will be interesting in how much this will be wrong.

  • Thoughts are that it will run iPhone OS. Perhaps Iphone OS 4.0. Partially correct.
  • Multi-Tasking, Multi-Touch, Resizeable Windows. Only the Multi-Touch was correct.
  • Would allow iPhone Apps to Run, so will allow existing Applications to Run. There will be an enhanced SDK for the iTablet. Correct
  • Would existing iPhone Developers be able to develop for it...? Increased fee for the iTablet. Yes, but no increases. Yet.
  • Around £599. Price Differentiation on Screen Size / Memory. 32 Gb/64 Gb/128 Gb. Partially correct.
  • More likely a scaled up Touch than a scaled up iPhone. Completely on the money...!
  • 3G...? Connect to iPhone over bluetooth...? Yep...!
  • Would be ideal for people who are Casual / Consumer Laptop users. People who just need a web-browser and Office. No need for a laptop that can go wrong / have viruses. Another correct one...!
  • All backed up by iTunes (but what about having to back everything up by USB...?) Firewire dock...? Yes, apart from Firewire.
  • Bundled with iLife...? iLife / iWork as iPhone OS apps. Separate item in presentation about iLife release. Correct about iWork. Incorrect about iLife.
  • GPS...? Yep, in the 3G version.
  • Locked down, had to Jail-Break to make sure that publishers are happy. Bingo...!

Scorecard : 9/12.

If you want to try out Firefox 3.6 but want everything working with minimal setup on Ubuntu Karmic, this is handy...

Just do:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install firefox-3.6

And you should now have an option in Applications -> Internet for Namoroka. This is the code name for Firefox 3.6 which you can now run. Add it should be set-up with all your plugins...! There's more details in this UbutnuForums Thread.

Updated for Natty Narwhal (Ubuntu 11.04)

Why Oracle 10g on Ubuntu...?

Oracle doesn't officially currently support its database on Ubuntu. However, I think that Ubuntu, especially the current release (09.10 : Karmic) is a great development platform. At my place of work there is a small development dept all busily developing and all using Ubuntu as the development platform of choice. The system we support uses Oracle 10g as its database. It followed that if we are to work productively then we needed some way of installing Oracle on Ubuntu. This guide is the result of lots of trial, error and spending time figuring out the best way to install Oracle 10g on Ubuntu.

Plenty of people who have blogs are doing their year-end round-ups, and this one is no different. Well, slightly different as I don't take everything so seriously... So without further ado, here is my most disappointing gadget of 2009 : Palm Pre.

The Palm Pre turned up at the beginning of 2009 with lots of rumour and expectations. It was going to be revolutionary type of phone with it's widely touted "synergy". But then then things started to unravel.
