There are many times that one may have to work from home. More and more people are now choosing this as a full-time choice, only rarely (if at all) venturing into the office. The majority of these connections are by VPN, usually requiring some kind of VPN Token. In the past, connecting Ubuntu to a VPN was clunky and required a lot of custom modules and compiling. These days, it's much easier.

However, the initial setup of a VPN can be quite complicated. When I was setting up my connection for the first time, I didn't realise that VPN Tokens come with PIN's. (The PIN is used as an additional security mechanism). When a VPN Token is first sent out, its in what is known as "new PIN mode".

Now, the built-in client (at least up to 11.04) doesn't include PIN Setup. So how do you do this...?

I've finally got around to installing Gnome 3, and its new Gnome Shell on Ubuntu 11.04. Since going back to the default of Unity (and Gnome Classic) is supposed to be complicated, I tried this out with a spare laptop first. After playing with it for a while, I found it is a much better "fit" to my work style than Unity was. (Not that Unity isn't a great attempt at workflow management...)

The other day I had the misfortune to run into Dell Data Safe. This is a Windows based backup solution that Dell appears to have been shipping with it's PCs for the last year or so. Unfortunately, when you try and dual-boot a computer with it, it becomes Dell Unsafe...! The terrible bit of software will over-write the MBR of a Windows 7 PC each time it boots. Why it does so it a mystery... Surely the people who developed were out of their minds when they came up with this particular method. A back-up and recovory solution that produces more problems than it solves.

Read on to find out how to deal with this bit of software and put it out of its misery...!

At the huge corporation that I spend my days at we have recently started using Yammer to communicate. Hopefully this will mean that communication between Depts, countries and all the various VP's will increase tremendously. Either that, or everyone will forget about it in two weeks.

Since it might be handy to publish items to your feed, here is how to do it in Python via the Yammer API.
