There's an interesting chart that's going around that shows just how successful Android is in the UK. It's from Nielson, via TechDigest. It shows that Android has 44 % share. That shows how successful Android is, right...? Problem is that is shows 25% of people bought Blackberries. Given that Blackberry has market-share problems of it's own, I suspect that this graph isn't an accurate representation of the UK market. I'd also suspect that Android market-share is significantly lower.
Buy hey, lies and statistics and everything....

Tags: java So it looks like Java 7 is finally out. Just when the mega-corp I work had finally migrated to Java 6. But it looks like there's some fairly painful bugs in it still. Lucid Imagination reports:
"Java 7 GA was released today, but as noted by Uwe Schindler, there are some very frightening bugs in HotSpot Loop optimizations that are enabled by default. In the best case scenario, these bugs cause the JVM to crash. In the worst case scenario, they cause incorrect execution of loops.".
So what is new in Java 1.7...? That we can't use just yet...?

Tags: travel I've been to many places, but I've never be to Dubai. That's why I found this piece in the Independent a few years ago quite illuminating : The dark side of Dubai. It's a tale of a boom gone wrong, and respectable white middle-class women forced to sleep in Range-Rovers in the hotel car-park. There's also tales of maids being ill-kept and slavery in the Middle Eastern dream.
It's an interesting read by the journalist Johann Hari. But there's yet another problem in paradise.

Tags: audio | gnome | ubuntu Recently I upgraded my install of Ubuntu 11.04 to Gnome Shell. All went ok, but I did notice that I had problems with sounds no longer working. Happily I have now managed to get my audio pumping out again...! I have made a note of the steps I used...
