There, I spoke to soon. When I upgraded a Mac Server with Snow Leopard Server 10.6 serving out a Joomla website I hit on these two problems:

1) Media Directory redirecting. This led to the Administration part of Joomla being non-useable. It turned out that /media was being redirected by Snow Leopard.

2) Menus weren't showing up.

Read "more" to find out how this problem was solved...

So it arrived and I spent an exciting 45 mins watching a blue bar getting longer. These are my first impressions:

  • Using my all-in-one Printer has changed. New instructions. Now I can use Preview and Image Capture, and don't have to rely on the clunky HP applications.
  • The minimise to dock option is nice, more logical and easier to find.
  • Had to re-install Xcode, ie upgrade to Xcode 3.2
  • Cornerstone doesn't appear to support Subversion 1.6 which is included with Snow Leopard. Need to review (a) whether this is a problem and (b) whether we could switch to Versions.app...
  • Google Contact Sync seems enabled.

However further investigation showed it probably wasn't the same. The Macbook could wake from sleep other times but only in the morning did it crash afterwards. I also noticed that in Terminal.app there was an i/o problem occurring after sleep. The true cause was revealed when last Saturday I rebooted the Macbook after another waking crash. Horrors...! A flashing folder, indicating that the hard-disk was AWOL...

So a new new version of Eclipse has been released — Eclipse Galileo, and I just had to install it. After unzipping it I had to add back the company Subversion server, so the upgrade wasn't completely seemless. I put this down to the information on the SVN servers being contained somewhere in the plugin.

One of the dirty little secrets of Linux, and Ubuntu in particular, is that it often has as much bloat as other operating systems. While Ubuntu often doesn't take as many resources as Windows, resources can be at a shortage. That's why I often find I turn to Epiphany Browser on Ubuntu. This is a nice little browser that works fast without taking up all the memory and cpu utilisation the Firefox often does.

However, unlike Firefox its a bit rough around the edges. And one of these rough patches is spelling. The following tips will let you enable spelling in Epiphany...
